Background of the Department

Department of Horticulture is one of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resource Departments. The program was launched in the 2010 E.C. with a harmonized curriculum entertained with six staffs (all with M.Sc. rank). Most of the staffs are with experience and are dedicated for their students. The department started its teaching learning activity with 96 (37 Female and 59 Male) students.

As an agriculture program, the department has a mandate of, beside the teaching learning activity, conducting vital problem-solving research and transfer research outputs to the community & provides community services. Department of Horticulture is aiming to produce competent and innovative professionals who are well-equipped with knowledge, skill, attitude and ethics to contribute to the development of the society.

The program focuses in the production of well trained professionals who are supposed to be in the community with their skill and know-how of solving the problems facing the society. It deals with high-valued crops which require good management to give a high return to the producers in a small land (Vegetables, Root & Tuber crops, Stimulant crops like coffee, tea.., Fruits, Spices & medicinal crops, Flowers). These make it to play a vital role in the development of the society and the country’s economy at large because most of the country’s cash crops like coffee Fruits & vegetables and flowers are dealt in this program.

The graduate can create their own job with a small capital in a small piece of land in a group and or individually. They can work in a national or regional agricultural research center, private farms, higher institutions as a lecturer, consultant and landscape designers.

 

Mission of the Department

The program will contribute to the development of agricultural sector and thereby ensure food security and self-sufficiency through;-

  • Teaching and research activities in the area of horticultural crop production and management
  • Generating knowledge and producing skilled manpower in the field of horticultural
  • Offering tailor-made trainings and consultancy services for those involved in horticultural crop production, either small scale producers and commercial as well
  • Modernizing horticultural crop production sector by supplying it improved technologies i.e. improved seed or planting material, propagation techniques, optimum fertilization, irrigation etc.
  • Improving the quality of living of the society by supplying surplus production by maximizing productivity.

 

Vision of the Program

The vision of the department is to become a full-fledged center of excellence in the field of horticulture that would put the University to be one of the top ten rank public Universities in Ethiopia. 

Program Goals

The department is aimed to contribute to the achievements of the national goal of increased agricultural production and use of horticultural crops for food security through:

  • Producing qualified and competent human power in the field of horticulture
  • Conducting research and development activities in the various fields of horticulture and thereby disseminate new and/or improved horticultural technologies to end users
  • Provision of consultancy services to the public and private institutions engaged in horticultural and related businesses.

 

Program Objectives

The program will help students to:

  • equip them with knowledge and skills necessary for production, management and post harvest handling of horticultural crops
  • Enable the students to understand and realize problems in horticultural crop production and seek solutions through exposure to research, extension and management.
  • deliver professional and technical advice on aspects of horticulture development and pursuing new knowledge through research
  • develop skill for planning ,designing , construction and management of public, residential, and institutional landscape
  • under take research and development activities in various aspects of horticulture and integrate teaching-research activities with extension activities so as to extend the new improved technologies to the community
  • equip them with the knowledge and skills with tools, equipments and techniques used in horticulture
  • develop managerial and entrepreneurship skill to set up their own horticultural business
  • equip students with the knowledge of value chain analysis of horticultural crops
  • organize and provide in-service and farmers‟ training programs in horticulture
  • equip students with knowledge and skill of writing, reporting and communicating for scientific papers
  • have the sense of cooperation, honesty and loyalty
  • inspire them to have a positive attitude towards their profession

Duration of the Program

  • A three-year academic time is required to acquire a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Horticulture. Each academic year further divided into two semesters.

 Admission Requirements

To be admitted to B.Sc. in Horticulture, candidates should fit to admission requirement to Ethiopian higher education institutions up on successful completion of two years preparatory education in natural science and pass the entrance examination prepared by the Ethiopian ministry of education. Placement of students to the program abides to the MoE affirmative regulation. Others like re-admission and advance standing shall be treated according to the academic rules and regulations of the university. Students who are graduated with diploma in the field of Horticulture, Plant sciences, General Agriculture and other related fields from recognized institutions can also apply to pursue their studies in regular, summer and extension programs based on the University legislation.
