Background of the Department

In Raya University, the Electrical and Computer Engineering department is opened in September 2010 E.C as one of the four departments opened the same year under the Engineering and Technology College; namely Electrical and Computer Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering. The establishment of the department is generally aimed at acquiring skilled man power in the field.

The First Electrical Engineering Program

The first curriculum of the department which was developed in 1997 G.C at national level was adapted mainly from Technology Faculty of Addis Ababa University. This curriculum used to take five years of study.

The Revised Electrical Engineering Program

That first curriculum was revised in 2003 G.C due to the nationwide implementation of a new education policy which reduced the duration of the program to 4 years. This revised curriculum was developed to address the change in education policy and the need of the market by incorporating new courses which were not present in the first curriculum.

Current Electrical Engineering Program

The last curriculum revision is done in 2005 E.C and starting from the earliest historical backgrounds, the Electrical and Computer Engineering department has grown and expanded from basic power and electronics engineering into four streams named as Communication Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Computer Engineering and Industrial Control Engineering.

Mission of the Department

The department is preparing young men and women to lead productive and rewarding professional lives at the forefront of engineering in the century we are living and pursues research and linkage with industries to advance the state-of-the-art in Electrical and Computer Engineering education.

At present, ECE department is running a BSc. degree program in a unified Electrical and Computer Engineering program; it is running a continuing education line up that leads to BSc. degree.

The graduates of the department will have profound knowledge in basic science, mathematics and social science; in addition to the major disciplines (Communication Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Industrial Control Engineering, and Computer Engineering (Hardware & Software)). This helps our graduates be qualified to work in a variety of jobs like installation, design, testing, research and sales of electrical/electronic devices and systems. The department aspires in making job-creating engineers; besides many of them will be engaged in Ethiopian Electrical Power Corporation, in Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation, in Ethiopian Airlines and various other industrial and business organizations.

As today’s Electrical and Computer engineers must be able to find solutions to the new complex and challenging technical problems, the department works students to have scientific, technical and managerial skills and be able to integrate technical concepts with practical applications. That is why the department felt that much is expected from to bring about changes in the field of Electrical Engineering, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the country; as the Ministry of Capacity Building initiated the revision of the curriculum in 2005 E.C.

Taking into consideration the requirements of modern industries, the department has realized that there is a need to implement the following four specializations (streams) in the present undergraduate engineering course.

  • Communication Engineering
  • Electrical Power Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Industrial Control Engineering,

The coverage of these specialized areas will be given during the last four semesters of the present BSc. program.

Vision of the Department

The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department aims to excel in teaching, research and industry linkage at both national and regional levels, and also in producing competent engineers in the field of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering to make a significant contribution in advancing engineering skills and knowledge in the country and bring growth. Generally, the department intends to be one of the top ten departments of the same field, in Ethiopia, by 2023 E.C.

Realization of this vision calls for focusing on specializations relevant to the need of the country; namely, Communication Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Industrial Control Engineering. This in turn obliges institutional reorganization such as upgrading to faculty level where each discipline may have its own department in the future; taking in mind that the attainment of this vision needs hard work on faculty, department, staff, and students level. This effort will require collaboration with the administration, alumni, industrial friends, different organizations and other universities.
